Let this be a sign among you, so that when your children ask later, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ Josh 4:6
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (Heb 11:1-2)
Hebrews 11, the great chapter of faith. We read about great men and women of faith: Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab and more, these faith warriors did one thing according to Hebrews: they believed. They understood Hebrews 12:6, that without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
I have been pondering this “faith chapter” for a few weeks. This morning I was on my way to church and I saw a beautiful picture of what it means for us to walk by faith.
Jesus took me to a beautiful flowing steam, crystal clear. The bottom was visible from looking down into the water. As we walked along the stream, I could see stones all across the bottom. They were golden and shining. I asked Jesus, “What are these shining stones?”
He answered, “These are stones of remembrance”.
He reached down and picked one up from the water and handed it to me. Etched into the stone were the words “by faith”. He handed me another one. It too had the same words etched into the stone, “by faith”. I wondered what this meant. He then told me to turn the stone over. I turned it over and etched into the back of the stone was the name “Noah”. On the other one was the name “Moses”. I reached down and pulled out another. It too had the words, “by faith” etched onto the front and on the back of that one was the word “Abraham”. I was beginning to understand, so I thought, until I pulled out the next one from the stream. The same words “by faith” etched on the front but on the back of this one was an etched name that made my toes tingle and a lump grow in my throat. It was my name. Jesus asked me, “Who’s name is on that stone?” I swallowed and lost my grip of all the other stones as they gently splashed back into the stream. I was staring at this beautiful golden stone, my hands shaking. Could it be true? Was this really my stone? “ME??”
Jesus smiled, put his hand gently on my shoulder and whispered, “Yes, it is your name”. I remember. I remember the time you had faith and trusted me, when everyone else said you were crazy. You kept trusting and loving me”.
He reached out his hand for my stone and I gave it to him. His hand began to glow and sing. I fell to my knees at the sound. The words of the song…could it be true? The stone was singing the word: FAITHFUL. Jesus began to laugh with great joy. He pointed his finger right at me and shouted, “FAITHFUL!”
“Do you see it, my child? The joy set before me to endure the cross was you! My blood flowed so you could be on that stone. If you were the only one, I would still have done it to be with you! And you believe in me. You believe I died for you and was raised from the dead. By faith, you believe in me. And that is accounted to me as my glory and joy!
Jesus handed the stone with my name on it back to me, my name facing up. “Turn it over, he said.
I turned the stone over and etched in the stone was the word “FAITHFUL” I flipped it over and there was my name.
Jesus then said, “Don’t forget. This is a place of remembrance. I will never forget you and have found you faithful”.
I squeezed my stone tight in my hand and wondered. We walked upstream a little ways and he smiled at me again and said, “Reach down and get that one”. I reached down and pulled it out, my heart beating hard in my chest. I looked down and the etching read “by faith”. I turned it over and etched on the other side was my name! I turned it over again and the words “by faith” again became “faithful”. He said to me, “By faith you prayed for the woman at the store and believed I would heal her”.
Putting his hands on my shoulders and looking at me with his fiery eyes, he said, “FAITHFUL!”
He then reached down and pulled stone after stone out of the stream and handed them to me as he said this: “You through faith conquer kingdoms, administer justice, gain what is promised, shut the mouths of lions, quench the fury of flames, and escape the edge of the sword. Your weakness is turned to strength and you are powerful in battle!”
My hands were filled with stones as I cupped them to my chest, each one with my name on it. Tears poured down my cheeks in awe as the stones sang in unison, “FAITHFUL, JESUS HAS FOUND YOU FAITHFUL. YOU ARE FAITHFUL…FAITHFUL.”
“You can kill giants with these stones”, Jesus says.
I looked back down at the stones and they were glowing with a deep red hew. I remembered Revelation 12:10-11
“…I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers[a] has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony….”
Jesus then said, “Yes these stones in your hands are meant to kill giants. They are the stones of your faith, for you believe that you overcome by my blood and the word of your testimony: which is your faith! My blood will always speak a better word than what the world says”.
So put aside every trace of malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander and hateful speech; 2 like newborn babies [you should] long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may be nurtured and grow in respect to salvation [its ultimate fulfillment], 3 if in fact you have [already] tasted [a]the goodness and gracious kindness of the Lord. Come to Him [the risen Lord] as to a living Stone which men rejected and threw away, but which is choice and precious in the sight of God.5 You [believers], like living stones, are [b]being built up into a spiritual house for a holy and dedicated priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen stone, a precious (honored) Cornerstone,
And he who believes in Him [whoever adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] will never be disappointed [in his expectations].”
7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe [in Him as God’s only Son—the Source of salvation] (2 Peter 2:1-7 AMP)
You are chosen as royal priests and kings before almighty God. There are stones with your name on them. I urge you to find them and use them for battle. For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers that rule over the earth…but greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world! You overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of your testimony. Your testimony is this: You have been found faithful! You are a living stone, an important part of the tabernacle of his dwelling place here on earth. You have been called to:
- Conquer kingdoms
- Administer justice
- Gain the promise
- Shut the mouths of lions
- Quench the fury of the flames
- Escape the edge of the sword
Jesus is turning your weakness into strength and making you powerful in battle as living stones set forth to kill giants and destroy the plans of the enemy!
